The Ministry of Finance in Guyana is primarily tasked with managing and ensuring sound public finances to promote robust economic development. It establishes a favourable environment for both public and private initiatives and plays a crucial role in resource mobilisation. The Ministry is also responsible for budget planning, public investment management, and financial oversight, which includes preparing and administering the annual budget, managing public sector investment programs, supporting economic development, ensuring sound financial practices and regulations, formulating policies to foster economic growth, mobilizing domestic and international resources to achieve national development goals, and conducting monitoring and evaluation.

Relationship With Ministry of Finance

The GGMC is not considered a reporting budgetary Agency, such as a Ministry. However, the GGMC is required to be aligned with broad fiscal/economic policy and guidelines as communicated from time to time by the said Ministry. Aspects of the Mining and Petroleum Legislation require certain actions from the Finance Minister; the GGMC has a reporting relationship with the Ministry of Finance, and again from time to time, in accordance with any financial/economic demands of the approved National Budget, makes payments to the consolidated fund.
